Digital Detox: A Sunday Reset for the Soul

One thing I’ve learned over the past few years: you can’t feel truly well if you're always connected. Between work, messages, social media, and the constant pressure to “keep up,” our minds are overloaded. Life is passing us by through a screen—and we don’t even notice it. Has it ever happened to you?
For me, Sundays have become sacred. A day for my family, for myself, for my mind. A day without screens. I call it my digital detox. And let me tell you—it feels like giving my brain a deep breath of fresh air. Disconnecting from the noise to reconnect with what actually matters.
Why Do We Need a Digital Detox?
The truth is, we’re drowning in information. According to Statista, the average adult spends over 7 hours a day in front of a screen. That’s practically a second full-time job! And most of the time, it’s not even intentional—it’s just doomscrolling, caught in a loop of negative news, random videos, and constant comparison on social media.
And it affects us more than we realize:
Anxiety
Mental fatigue
Trouble focusing
Poor sleep
Disconnection from our partner and kids
Worse than that, it leaves us feeling constantly “busy” but not truly productive.
I know because I lived it. I felt tired, irritable, constantly behind on things—until I realized how much time I was losing to my phone. That’s when I decided: Sundays will be tech-free. No screens, just real life.
Why Sunday?
Because Sundays already have a slower rhythm. It’s the natural pause in the week. And if we use it with intention, it becomes the perfect time to:
Refocus
Reconnect
Truly rest
Mentally prepare for the week ahead
I like to think of it as a “mini retreat at home.”
How to Do a Digital Detox on Sunday
Here’s what my routine looks like, with some simple tips you can try too:
🧘♀️ 1. Start the Morning Without Your Phone
Leave it in another room if you can. Instead of checking social media as soon as you wake up, take a few minutes for yourself: breathe, stretch, journal, or just enjoy your coffee in silence.
👨👩👧👦 2. Make It a Family Plan
Tell your partner, kids, or housemates that it’s a “no screen” day. You can even make a list together of things to do: board games, cooking something new, doing a puzzle, going for a walk, reading, or doing crafts.
📵 3. Turn Off Notifications or Use Airplane Mode
If you need to keep your phone on for emergencies, put it on “Do Not Disturb” or turn off app notifications. I have a little box where I leave my phone for the day—it removes the temptation.
🌿 4. Do Something With Your Hands
Cook, bake, paint, plant something, organize a space in your home—anything that requires your hands and your attention. I love baking bread or doing a fun kitchen project with my kids. It feels like we’re making something together.
📝 5. End the Day With Intention
Before bed, take a moment to reflect on how you felt. Write in a journal, plan your week, or simply notice the difference a tech-free day made. I always go to bed calmer, clearer, and more connected.
The Benefits I’ve Felt
Since I started doing this, I’ve noticed:
I feel more present with my kids
My mind is quieter
I have less anxiety and more clarity
I connect better with my husband (real conversations without interruptions!)
Most of all, I feel more in control of my time
It’s not magic. It’s just giving your brain a break, letting the silence in, and remembering what really matters.
Ready to Try It This Sunday?
You don’t have to go all in from the start. Begin small—maybe just a screen-free morning, or turning off your phone during family meals. The important thing is to do it intentionally, from a place of love—for yourself and the people around you.
If you try it, let me know in the comments or send me a message. I’d love to hear how it goes. 💛
And if you’re into this kind of intentional living, every week on Las Aventuras de Araceli, I share tips to live more present, more mindful, and more in balance.
See you next Sunday… screen-free!
